Top 7 AR Trends in 2021 - Must Know

Augmented Reality technology is becoming more and more popular among consumers from around the world. At the end of 2020, it was estimated that there were a total of 598 million AR active devices, which were to be increased to 1.73 billion by 2024, according to research by ARtillery Intelligence.

As more consumers adopt AR technology, AR is moving into the mainstream and turning into a niche technology. 2020 marked a significant period of growth for AR, and 2021 will set a new benchmark to expand on this. Here are the top 7 trends of AR in 2021.

Automotive Industry: How safe would it be if driving a car was completely safe and secure? Imagine if we could reduce road accidents or if we could avoid the unwanted traffic situation on prior notice. Well, this is already becoming a reality. With Nissan's Invisible-to-Visible technology, any unseen obstacles on the road nearby are visually represented in front of the driver. Another way, the I-to-V can create an Avatar which is physically invisible but can be a driving companion digitally and can guide people through the course. Thus, the driver becomes more aware of any potential hazards. The app also helps redirect the driver's focus to the road in case of any distraction.

AR has already taken a front seat in Automobile marketing as well. BMW and Accenture developed an AR application that can provide the customers a real-time driving experience in a new way without going to the dealership. They can virtually see the car in different colors and choose their desired model to buy.

Smart Glass: Microsoft Hololens, a familiar name in AR, made lives of people more accessible in various ways. But this is 2021. We can literally buy anything through the watch on our wrist! So, technology has become more demanding, and in this era, smart glasses happen to be more wearable and easy to use.

Speaking of which, FB has launched its first smart glass in October 2021. Designed collaboratively with RayBan, these super sleek glasses are stylish as well as rich in technology. It can easily capture photos and short videos and make the sharing process through FB even more fun and engaging. Additionally, with these glasses, one can listen to music and can answer their phone calls too. It has included a red LED light on the frame, which will light up while capturing a video and thus lower the security breaches.

Lenovo and Vuzix have also released their smart glasses earlier this year, aiming at the consumer market. So, in 2021 FB lens, along with its competitors, is undoubtedly an excellent start to push AR into further steps ahead and making the essence of using mobile phones less.

Phone-5G: 5G, which is 20times faster than its predecessor, 4G, has already taken up the market in the last two years. This 5th generation mobile network enhances the AR experience by richer visual content, lower latency, and consistent quality. Up until now, 5G can only be experienced in selected areas, but from 2021 and beyond, with more places in the world getting 5g, AR is to become a more widely adopted technology.

Education: With the new generation’s ever-shrinking attention span, the education system has started adopting technologies more and more in recent decades. AR in education provides an immersive learning experience for students of all ages. The apps can scan books, worksheets, and flashcards and provide additional information and resources that help students engage and focus more.

For example, in January, the guitar brand Gibson launched its ‘Epic’ app, offering an immersive and interactive learning experience. The app uses audio AR, allowing users to hear themselves playing guitar with a virtual band, and then it provides feedback as they do so.

LiDAR: The reach of LiDAR technology has increased drastically when it is included in smartphones. Apple included this technology first in its iPad Pro 2020 and now in iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max. Preparing a scene to be populated with virtual objects and allowing people to onboard it is an essential step in AR that LiDAR vastly improves upon. The trend of LiDAR being used on consumer devices certainly opens up a wide range of possibilities for AR technology in 2021.

Healthcare: AR is highly effective in the healthcare industry. With the help of AR, doctors can collaborate with their teams and discuss surgical strategies. For example, AccuVen uses projection-based AR that scans patients' bodies and shows doctors the exact location of veins and thus improves the injection of the vein. Another example could be the use of the Proprio platform. It combines Machine learning with AR and creates an ultra-precise 3D image that helps surgeons see through obstacles and collaborate with the team on surgery plans.

Shopping: In the post-pandemic world, if anything has boomed it is online shopping. A pandemic turned the luxury of online shopping into a necessary one, and thus retailers are widely using AR in their apps to give the consumers a real-life shopping experience through their smartphones. Wearable AR devices will allow retailers to send notifications and deliver a customized shopping experience based on consumer preferences. For example, make-up brands like Nykaa or eyewear brands like lenskart also implemented AR to help users try on the make-up products or glasses before the purchase.

So, there you go! The top 7 trends of AR in 2021. According to research, AR’s value is climbing up to $25billion by 2025, which indicates that the future of AI is really bright. So, prepare to be entertained by more AR games and Avatars and keep an eye on the news for new AI releases and enjoy this new technology!!
